In 2021, Warner Bros premiered films on HBO Max on the same day that they were released in theaters. That approach may have helped the cultural saturation of movies such as Dune or King Richard, both of which received Oscar attention. However, some critics believe that it also undercut the box office chances of genre films expected to do well, including James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad and Lana Wachowski’s The Matrix Resurrections. Warner Bros. hopes that by releasing The Batman exclusively in theaters 45 days before its HBO Max premiere, the movie will enjoy both a large viewership and strong box office receipts.
